Wow, rock pioneer Little Richard gone at 87. So I worked at this place a while back, and my immediate boss was this younger guy. Like in his early twenties. And he was super into all these emo screamy bands with names like As My Heart Bleeds Into The Dawn or whatever the fuck. And, I think because he knew I was in a metal band and a few years older than him, he turns to me one day and asks, "so who was like, the first band to do, like, screaming vocals, do you think?" I dead-ass looked at him and said "Little Richard," and I don't think that was the answer he was expecting! True though, in my opinion - I see a fairly unbroken line from Little Richard to The Beatles (Paul McCartney in particular) to heavy metal in general, and then to all the subgenres that descend from it. And as influential as guys like Lemmy Kilmister and Tony Iommi were in that sphere, they wouldn't have sounded like they did in that time without The Beatles and Little Richard (among others, of course). Suffice to say that, without him, rock music as we know it wouldn't sound/have sounded like it does.

Yeah, the guy really took that new rock and roll thing to a new level in his day. I was surprised to hear Lemmy mention the Beatles with such reverence in his documentary, and I’m sure I remember hearing him talk about Little Richard as well. Lemmy, of all people, but those acts look tame and corny to us in these times, but then, they were the outsiders with a new, dangerous sound, acting in non wholesome, lewd ways, threatening to tear up the fabric of polite society! Yeah, hearing what I consider to be the distilled essence of rock in Lemmy pay homage to pioneers like the Beatles and Little Richard really made me want to head back and reanalyze them.

I got to see him perform at Arrowhead Stadium about 20 years ago. He still had it and 16 year-old me probably felt something similar that kids that age 50 years before had felt hearing that, even though I was already acquainted with what came after. The man left a tremendous legacy and I'm glad that he's being remembered so fondly across so many generations of fans.

411Mania's Larry Csonka passed away today - he was my go-to-guy for reviews when I hadn't been able to watch shows, which is most of the time when it comes to WWE's weekly stuff. Seemed like a pretty good guy, and he was pretty quick to note if someone had a new look or used a new move, which always helped me go back and watch just the matches I needed to in order to get some edits updated.

Oh gosh! Wow. I haven't been to 411Mania in forever (though as it happens I nearly went there yesterday) but I remember Larry. Sorry to hear that.
I hope I'm not mixing this up with a different columnist but, he asked his readers once what we thought was the worst finisher. I wrote in saying how I felt about Monty Brown's Pounce except, I didn't notice until he replied that I wrote Monty Python. He thought it was funny though.
Godspeed you not-former-Dolphins-great.

Larry Csonka was also the co-host of American Gladiators with Mike Adamle. Man, I remember classic AG episodes all blurring together so much. :)

Though to be fair, that was always a running joke with him.

Oh, so no Csonka-strator for wrestling matches?
I didn't even know about Second Larry Csonka until now, but it sounds like his column was cool. I stopped reading wrestling articles on the internet in the mid-2000s, but from what Avenger said, I might have enjoyed his had I known about it.
