So yeah, outside of being the National Day for Canada, Somalia, and Rwanda, July 1 (or 1 July) is ALSO Bobby Bonilla Day! In case you're not a longtime fan of Major League Baseball or have just never heard of this, Bobby Bonilla Day marks the day of the year that the New York Mets pay former outfielder Bobby Bonilla $1.19 million USD.....every year.....until 2035. This came about after the Mets released an underperforming (by his expectation; he was a star in through most of the 90s) Bonilla in the year 2000. The Mets still owed him $5.9m when he was released but since that was considered a pretty good chunk of change for a baseball player at the time, especially one that isn't actually on your team anymore, Bonilla and his agent offered the Mets a deal wherein the $5.9m sum was deferred for an entire decade (and with a healthy 8% interest) after which it would be paid annually until nothing else was owed, effective in 2011. After a decade of interest, the total owed to Bonilla was $29.8m. Thus on every July 1 since 2011, the New York Mets have paid Bobby Bonilla an annual sum of $1,193,248.20! Definitely one of the more unusual contract negotiations in MLB history lol Horrible news for the Mets but good news for everyone else. It guarantees that the world will exist until at least 2035 since nothing is breaking that contract 😁

So yeah, Patrick Mahomes just got PAID We don't actually know the particulars outside of it being a 10 year extension (he had two years remaining on his rookie contract, as the Chiefs already exercised the 5th year option....after year 3 xD) but the full duration of the contract will keep him in Kansas City for the next 12 years. Regardless of whether this upcoming season even happens, I am so excited about this move because with all due respect to the decayed remnants of Joe Montana, Trent Green, and the criminally underrated (among Hall of Fame QBs, that is) Len Dawson, the Chiefs have never had a quarterback anywhere this dynamic. Never. Here's hoping that Mahomes can have as long and healthy a career as those guys (except Green....his career was plagued and eventually shortened by injuries; he was damn good though in the early 2000s). NFL MVP in year 1 as a starter and Super Bowl MVP the next year? Yeah, this young man is golden. I've never been so happy for one of my teams to throw ludicrous money at a player!
edit: in the time it took me to write that, it's been revealed that the extension is for 10 years, $450 million, and includes $140 million guaranteed (which means that if something catastrophic happened, he'd at least get that much, knock on a pine forest there)
it is the richest contract in sports history

Can't say he's not worth it. Phenomenal start to a career. Injury and Lamar Jackson are biggest threats to best QBs of all time.

This just in. Washington's NFL team confirmed it will be changing its name but has not yet revealed to what.

It's really kind of amazing that it's lasted so long (since 1933). Sure it was a sign of the times but you'd think they'd have rethought it by the 70s, after the notoriously racist team founder had passed on and ownership changed hands. It will be curious to see what the new name is.
I've seen some people also calling for the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and Kansas City Chiefs to change their names. I think the Indians will eventually happen (they already dumped their racial caricature logo a couple of years back) but I don't think "Braves" or "Chiefs" is as egregious as the others and I don't see them changing, though I'd expect a pretty firm distancing from things like the "tomahawk chop" fan rally and Native American imagery in general (which both teams feature prominently in their logos; the Chiefs' stadium is called Arrowhead ffs, after the logo). As regards my Chiefs, I'm pretty neutral on it as I'd like for the name and logo to remain but if it's actually insensitive to someone who would realistically be offended by it (i.e. not the social media echo chambers full of people seeking attention) then I'm all for a change.
Guess we'll see.

Guess we'll see. When I found out the chiefs were named the chiefs because it was the nickname of a guy who had a lot of influence in their move, I have a hard time with them keeping that name. (I am neutral to the actual franchise) I personally as a Cleveland baseball fan am looking forward to a name change I am already glad they got rid of the problem caricature though it still on most of their hats they have for sale(usually the back). I really like the c logo and that's it. Give me a new good name.

If I remember right, the Indians were named that because they had a player way back when that was nicknamed the Indian or something similar. Still, I wouldn't really miss it if they did change the name.
EDIT: OK, it's more like the current franchise is a successor to another Cleveland team that had a player that is often credited as the first Native American to play professional baseball. Or at least, that's the claim. There seems to be some dispute on that.

So, further developments in Washington. Apparently their owner had been holding a trademark on Washington Warriors since 2000, suggesting he knew there would be demand for a name change sooner or later. So naturally he let it lapse this March before finally confirming a name change.
Mostly I'm just bringing it up because it amuses me to think of the Warriors in conjunction with that market's basketball team, the Wizards.

All they'd need would be for the Nationals to rename themselves the "Rogues" and their starting party would be set!
But yeah, that seems like a Daniel Snyder thing to do....all around. He's owned the team for 20 years and all they have to show for it are two division titles (that both led to early playoff exits) and the ruined careers of many a promising franchise savior. I'm not a Skins fan so I don't know all of the dirty deets but from an outsider's perspective, he hasn't been very good for the brand.

I was thinking of Wizards & Warriors myself but that works too.

Since warriors almost always uses native imagery also it's a good thing he did. Otherwise it would have barely been a difference.

I mean, yeah, it's true they probably would've kept their existing imagery but the name itself wouldn't have been as ugly. Keep in mind it's coming from the guy that was quoted a few years back as saying the team would NEVER (emphasis his) change its name.
Regardless, it'll be interesting to see what direction they do end up taking. Between that and Seattle's NHL franchise, we have a few branding announcements to look forward to in the near future.

I'm always excited for some new team names and logos. Which makes me want these changes even more. It's the other reason I want the Indians to get a new nickname. I still like the team but it needs a new team name. Side note: all this talk of changing team names has me going through an old Madden game slowly making new teams for all the existing rosters to go into.

So, NHL’s newest team will be the Seattle Kraken (better than the mighty ducks, that was the last straw for my NHL fandom. That name NEVER would have made it in the NFL, NBA, or MLB). I like the logo and the name. An NBA team and now hockey, crazy stuff, hopefully we’ll see a day where people can go check a game out again!
Also, after 70 years, our CFL team, the Edmonton Eskimos will no longer have that moniker, not unlike so many NFL and MLB teams. I’m indifferent to a name change, it’s the appropriate thing to do, I’m surprised it took this long. It’s odd, I never though of the name in a derogatory way, there were never any cartoon mocking faces of Inuit people or anything, no stupid chants, just fun football, but the change is necessary. I think we’ll end up the Empire or something, hopefully not the ROUGHRIDERS (there were two teams in the CFL at one time called the Roughriders...).
