Reviews for Samurai Shodown now coming out. Long story short, it's good. My pre-load is now at about 9 gigs of 18, so probably another day or two to go. I did pick up Samurai Shodown VI on Steam as a spur of the moment purchase as well since it was only $10. I'm going to check to see if the PS4 fight controllers work with it.

It's good to hear that the journalists like the game. Much as I detest them as a whole, their opinion unfortunately "counts" since it impresses people who have less knowledge/interest about a given game. Hopefully, the game will be a resounding financial success for SNK.
I just don't feel like buying in right now, even with the free season pass bit. I'm mainly into 1P game modes (yes, even in fighters) and I think I can wait for a price drop to partake in Samurai Shodown's offerings there. I've loved everything I've seen of the game thus far but it's just not worth $60 to me, personally (even with the season pass pre-order, which is awesome; probably going to be $20 for the 4 character pack when it retails).

Yeah, I tend to be pretty cynical about reviewers for a lot of my favorite stuff but I'm hearing things that I was hoping to hear about this game. This review tickled me where I itched 😁 kotaku.com/samurai-shodown-is-slow-and-deliberate-in-the-best-way-1835805404The biggest concern I had about Samurai Shodown was just that I can only seem to juggle a few fighting games at once at any given time. My interest in KOF XIV has gone up a ton over the past few weeks and I was getting worried it would compete with Samurai Shodown but I think the two games are VERY different based on KOF's focus on combos into supers and SS's focus on defensive techniques, big hits, timing, and spacing. In short, Samurai Shodown is all about dat Maai whereas KOF remains all about dat Mai 😁

YES!! Really excited for the One Punch Man game! 👏😎 So the confirmed Season Pass characters are: Rimururu - August Basara - October Kazuki Kazama - December (Pretty much confirms his brother will be future DLC) Wan-Fu - February Solid DLC characters early on and I hope they keep it up. Big fan of Basara's look and wow, Wan-Fu's new weapon looks really fun to use!

Could do without Rimu but the others are all neat additions.
If they go the KoF XIV and have two seasons of additional characters, I could see them adding Gen-An, Cham Cham, Sogetsu, and probably Iroha. Personally, I'd be fine with Gen-An and Seiger but we know one of those most certainly isn't happening >_<

It's almost embarrassing how much I "marked" because Mumen Rider is playable. I'd have been interested anyway but that may have just sold me xD

I wonder if this will make it out of Japan? Cool idea though, this will be a funny game! I think Kenshiro and robo Lambeer should be hidden characters!

I loved that episode where they showed his heroism, when Saitama was riding on his bike with him. I really need to watch Season 1 all over again. Really glad that he's in the game!! 🏍 I wonder if this will make it out of Japan? Cool idea though, this will be a funny game! I think Kenshiro and robo Lambeer should be hidden characters! I'd mark out pretty big for a hidden character like Kenshiro so we can finally get him vs. Saitama! PS4 is region-free, right? I'd totally import this if I need to. Robo Laimbeer against Genos would be Match of the Digital Millennium 😁

Samurai Shodown (PS4 disc version) came to me a week early!
I only got to play it for about 2 hours on Sunday but so far I love it.
A lot of my love for specific fighting games just comes down to the "feel" of moving the characters and the "weight/smoothness" of their animations. For example, I always found SF3 a little too "heavy" and Guilty Gear a little too "light." Samurai Shodown should be heavier than SF2 but not so heavy that it turns into Samurai Shodown 3 which felt like "Melee in Molasses" cause of how slow and heavy it was.
This Samurai Shodown somehow achieves a perfect balance. The characters feel good in movement, with some variance in characters but no one feeling too slow. I also love the weapon impact. Haohmaru's fierce slash is kind of the standard of regular hard hits. It has plenty of impact but doesn't take forever to swing or for him to recover. It really hits a great balance. I'd say its actually a little quicker than his fierce slash in Capcom vs. SNK 2, oddly enough.
I only used 3 characters so far: Haohmaru, Jubei, and some other dude who has like 20 swords but whose name I forgot. Haohmaru is your character for the Tutorial mode and he felt as Haohmaru'ish as ever. If you like him, you'll enjoy him in this. He's a logical pick for the tutorial since he doesn't have a ton of specials, has good normals, and everything just clicks with him especially if you have played SS in the past.
I really loved using Jubei. His regular strikes just feel right and are aimed in good locations for target spacing. My favorite thing about him are the QCB special counters!! He has three: one against low attacks, one against medium attacks, and one against jumps. As a huge fan of special counters (that I have had ever since Fatal Fury Geese), I love that they exist in this game and with one of my favorite characters. That said, special counters in SS are extremely risky given the amount of damage per move. So I'll have to be conservative with them.
My favorite game mechanic is, itself, a counter. One of the disarming moves is a counter that you perform right before your opponent attempts a move with their weapon. This takes crazy timing to anticipate and pull off but looks awesome when done. The same mechanic exists when you are disarmed and you catch the opponent's blade. There's also an "S-Groove" style dodge which is really helpful and "K-Groove/GAROU" style "Just Defense" which is paired with a "charge" move. So you can use a Just Defense and then immediately send the opponent down and get some space.
Really looking forward to using more of the characters: especially Charlotte and also that guy I tried with 20 swords who seemed really confusing but likely worth the effort.
If you love Samurai Shodown and SNK games in general, this is a must buy.
The music and stages are beautiful too!

Yep, Yoshitora 'Seven Sword' Tokugawa, who is actually inspired by Tokugawa Ienari, not for his dueling but rather for his massive harem of concubines.

LOL now I'm not sure what aspect of him drew me to him: the swords or the...ahem, "sheaths" 😁
And yeah, Yoshitora was the guy I was referring to. He looks really cool and plays smooth but he has a lot of special moves and initially confused me a little. That's okay though. The characters I tend to like most are the ones with the learning curves as a result of having multiple specials and either special counters or command grabs. I believe he has a command grab whereas Jubei has a special counter.
