Interesting, somehow over the years I’ve barely played the darkstalkers series, it would be cool to finally check them out.
SF6, eh? With capcom’s track record, ryu and whoever the “USA” gloves guy is are probably the entire release roster, with every other character to be released either individually or in “season” packs for the price of a full game. 🙄

I am excited for what Capcom could do with SF6 and that Ryu finally got footwear as part of his promotional deal. Soles of that dudes feet have to look like Medusa's face at this point! 🐍 The trailer was fine. Obviously just an early teaser/news drop. I don't want to read too much into it... But I will anyway 😁 It's interesting they brought SF4 ink style back as well as the hyper-jacked physical design of SF4. I think SF5 is regarded as a step back from the success of SF4 from the start even though it wasn't the game itself that people initially took issue with. (the media hated the lack of single player content even though Capcom never promised anything different early on.) So I worry that Capcom may be blaming the lack of mainstream sales success and media friendliness on the aesthetic of the SF5 characters compared to SF4 rather than the PR issues the game had. None of those early issues were about the aesthetics or gameplay. Personally, I liked the more anime-looking style of SF5 and Alpha-like vibe. But we're a while away from seeing how SF6 actually looks and moves. Fighting games are cyclical in terms of mainstream acceptance so I'm not convinced the casual gamers that bought SF4 (and then tired of it to the point they ignored SF5) will be back on board with SF6. I do think the jacked physical designs in the trailer and the choice of a modern MMA style fighter as a main headlining character was designed to pique their interest though. I mentioned last week that KOF XV came out. SNK is probably not too pleased that the SF6 announcement stole some of their thunder. Shades of the ole Capcom/SNK rivalry flaring up again, perhaps? In any case, I finally got to play KOF XV at length last night. It's awesome!! 🏆 I had trouble putting it down. It was even more silky smooth than the impressive XIV and the addition of some of my favorite characters makes it even better for me. The Orochi Team, Yashiro specifically, are very well represented in moveset, character, and overall feel. Yashiro is a mobile tank and the heft of his attacks feels perfect. Chris is incredibly quick but still feels tethered to the game's animation engine in a good way. Other favorites of mine feel great like Clark who I probably like more in this game than any recent ones. Ryo Sakazaki and Blue Mary feel great as well. I only got to use a few characters but I used them for a long time in Mission Mode. I can't wait for the Geese/Yamazaki/Billy Kane DLC in May! If you were ever into KOF, I highly recommend playing this 😎 I will note that single player modes are limited. But I play maybe once/twice a week and just to use my favorite characters in this great engine. If you are expecting a single player experience as deep as the recent MK games or even SF5, you'll probably be a bit disappointed. The game was made for online competition or for people who just play a few times a week and love the KOF characters/world, series mechanics, and engine. I sure would like some more trials/challenges per character though.

LOL I just saw a pretty funny article about this too: kotaku.com/street-fighter-6-vi-capcom-graphic-design-logo-sf6-sf5-1848573656The comments are the best: Sadly, this is further confirmation that Capcom may be embracing an ultra-serious MMA approach for SF6. SF has had its share of goofiness and creative fighting styles over the years and I'm concerned we're gonna get an aggro "Do you wanna be a f'n fighter" vibe and modern day homogenization of styles and attires to this game. Dan Hibiki: "So why do all your clones do BJJ, ground'n'pound, and American style Muay Thai now?" Ryu: "Do you even lift, bro?"

I mean, Ken looked like he was halfway there in V. A Tapout logo wouldn't look out of place on that shirt he was wearing.
Speaking of V, I think I read somewhere that the newcomer being featured in VI's trailer was some latecomer in V's DLC scheme.
Google tells me his name is Luke but I keep wanting to call him Steve since he kinda reminds me of Steve Fox from Tekken.

As a single game SFV did well (6.1 million from Capcom's own list) but I'm not sure that's necessarily better than IV and its offshoots.

As a single game SFV did well (6.1 million from Capcom's own list) but I'm not sure that's necessarily better than IV and its offshoots. The problem with V was that it took Capcom almost two years to bring it up from an early access game to a full game in terms of content. Hopefully they learned their lesson and will not be repeating that.

Was that a lesson to learn, or their new business model? Felt like they were gunning for Tecmo’s dead or alive dlc bonanza approach to fighting games. I hope they get back to the old way of releasing an actual game and MAYBE one stupid complete thing a couple of years down the road 🤞

I mean, Ken looked like he was halfway there in V. A Tapout logo wouldn't look out of place on that shirt he was wearing. I think we'll see Ryu in a "Shoto Top Team" shirt complete with "Results" headband. M. Bison can be the seedy owner of the promotion publicly bickering with its fighters. Balrog will be like: "wow, I left boxing to get away from this shit 🤷♂️" I just really hope Capcom understands that the unpopularity of SFV for the first two years (and arguably afterward) had nothing to do with the aesthetics or vibe of the game and had everything to do with the "lack of full game" experience that people took issue with. While some of the media treatment was unfair (since many people accused Capcom of promising something they never did at the start), Capcom was still seen as phoning in SF5 and trying to PR its way out of offering a sub-standard "game package" compared to rival fighting games that had full single player modes. (A lot of the press didn't seem to care that SF5's core gaming experience/mechanics was considered by many as worlds ahead of other games that offered full single player experiences but had more shallow gameplay). It took Capcom a while to raise SF5's reputation and I don't think they ever truly did in the eyes of the mainstream gaming press. A game that started off being primarily offered to the hardcore audience stayed within that audience. It certainly was never ranked as highly as SF4 by more mainstream news outlets but it wasn't actively ignored like SF3 was when it came out. Sales wise, I really don't know how SF5 did compared to SF4 in total sales or how many sales were made per year. But in many people's perception, SF5 was a step back from SF4. I hope Capcom corrects the real issues they had communicating their expectations for the launch of SF6, continues to focus on excellent and dense gameplay the series always offered, aims to have more of a robust single player experience (even if it means taking longer to release the game), and doesn't ascribe SF5's issues to the tone or look of the game. If they really want to go a more serious/MMA route, that's fine as long as they are creatively running toward it rather than running away from SF5 under the false impression the more playful vibe (compared to SF4) ruined the game's success. Hopefully they do something about that bargain basement logo though.

Picked up Soul Calibur VI again recently. Been enjoying playing Cassandra and, of all people, Setsuka. I don't know if it's placebo or a deliberate design choice, but Setsuka feels like she's much easier to handle in this iteration of the game, compared to past iterations and as Alpha Patroklos in SCV.

Testament came out as the final character in the Guilty Gear Strive season pass and they look freaking awesome but I am 145 hours deep into Elden Ring with no end in sight so I'm not getting much in the way of FIGHTING done.

The "Southtown" DLC pack has been released by SNK last night! Billy Kane, Ryuji Yamazaki, and Geese Howard are now available as DLC!! They are also accessible for no extra cost if you bought certain versions of the game. I thought they would immediately be in the game when the update started but they weren't. It was still very easy to get them though. Their squares were on the player selection screen and clicking on one of their squares brought me to the PSN Store DLC menu for the game. Then I just downloaded the Southtown pack and the characters actually installed while the game was still on. I also downloaded the previous DLC pack with Rock Howard. I'm hoping to spend a lot more time with KOF now that I have these characters. I got about 30-45 minutes of play last night and was really impressed. Geese and Yamazaki are both a joy to use. I really liked Yamazaki in KOF 14 but wasn't as fond of what they did with Geese. He didn't really "feel" right in terms of his animation. They fixed that in 15. Not only does he feel great to use, but he's arguably more fun than ever before. They changed his auto "Jai-En-Ken" rush special into a manual one: similar to a Fei Long "Rekka Ken." It has branching paths and is a great finish to regular combos and start to cancelable DM moves. One of the best changes they made to a long-time move. (And the exact opposite of what they did to Chris' flip move which became more auto). The only downsides to Geese in 15 are that that they seemed to get rid of his rushing DM - the Deadly Rave. I don't know why they did that as it would have been really fun to chain his Jai-En-Ken into the Deadly Rave. It's also a legacy move that has always been really satisfying to complete and has a storyline reason as an "Evil" version of the Sakazaki rush DM. And the DM they brought over from 14, the DM version of the Reppuken, is so underwhelming and phoned in. I don't like that replacement. What I really do like is Geese's new counter DM. That is an excellent move for him and so satisfying to pull off. I can't remember if he ever had that in a previous game but it wasn't prominent in recent years. This Geese may be right up there with his definitive versions in Capcom vs. SNK 2 and KOF 2002: UM. Also, Yamazaki is just as fun to use in 15 as he was in 14. They made a great addition in a new "stomp opponent on the ground" move. I love that. What I don't love is that they took away his rushing knife slash special. That has been a signature move of his for years and shouldn't have been removed. Otherwise, he's really fun to play. Looking forward to playing this much more 😎

So many mixed feelings toward this new SF.
The concerns I had after the teaser a few months ago are amplified.
But in an attempt tp stay positive...they fixed up the logo, at least 😄
Seriously though, I do really like the potential of the free roaming idea. Personally, I've always wanted a fighting game where you can free roam only to have the combat warp (like an RPG) into a fighting game.
I just hope the open world doesn't feel too empty. And if they have non-SF style fighting in the open world, it's gonna pale in comparison to Sleeping Dogs.
I saw a bunch of very cool looking parries later in the video so that gives me some optimism as well.
